Made to Order vs. Ready to Ship: How to Plan a Pet Gift

Made to Order vs. Ready to Ship: How to Plan a Pet Gift

A useful gift deserves enough time to arrive. Here is how to read production and shipping estimates before you order.

The gift is picked out. The date is on the calendar. Then comes the less charming question: will it actually arrive in time?

Two phrases often appear on product pages: made to order and ready to ship. They describe what happens before a package enters transit. Understanding that first step makes it much easier to plan a birthday, a holiday, or a small surprise for the pet who has already inspected the wrapping paper.

The short answer

Made to order Ready to ship
When is the item made? After an order is placed. Before it is listed as available stock.
What happens before dispatch? The item is produced, then prepared for shipping. The finished item is picked, packed, and prepared for shipping.
Does it still need transit time? Yes. Transit begins after dispatch. Yes. Being in stock does not mean it has arrived.
What should you check? Production estimate and transit estimate. Order processing estimate and transit estimate.

Petieer currently makes all orders after purchase. We explain ready-to-ship here to help you understand the terms you may see while shopping; it is not a current Petieer product option.

What “made to order” means

A made-to-order item enters production after you place your order. That can mean printing, sewing, assembling, or finishing a product, depending on what it is. It also means the package cannot begin its trip the moment you check out.

Made to order does not automatically mean personalized, custom designed, or handmade. Those are separate features that a product page should state clearly if they apply. Choosing an existing Petieer design in your size or color does not turn it into a name- or photo-personalized gift.

The practical question is simple: how much time should I allow before the item ships? Check the individual product page and the current Petieer shipping policy before you buy, especially when a date matters.

What “ready to ship” means

A ready-to-ship item is already finished and held in stock. After an order is placed, it can move to picking, packing, and dispatch without a separate production stage. It may still need processing time, and it still needs time with the carrier.

“Ready to ship” is therefore different from “arrives tomorrow.” If another store uses the phrase, look for its dispatch estimate, destination, shipping method, and any holiday or carrier notices before assuming a delivery date.

Production time and transit time are two different clocks

For a Petieer order, the planning sequence is:

Order placed → production → dispatch → transit → delivery

Our current policy asks customers to allow 1–7 business days for production before an order ships. It lists 1–2 business days for standard items and up to 7 business days for complex or specialty items. Production time can vary with the product and current demand; do not assume a particular item falls into the shorter group without checking its listing.

Once an order has been produced and dispatched, the policy estimates 3–8 business days in transit within the United States or 5–12 business days to Canada. An order placed on a weekend or public holiday begins production on the next business day.

The useful formula is production time + transit time. These are estimates, not a guaranteed arrival date. Peak periods, weather, carrier disruption, and customs processing for international orders can affect delivery. If the calendar is tight, plan with the longer end of the relevant estimates and leave additional room for delay.

Work backward from the day you need the gift

Start with the day you want to hand it over, not the day you hope to click “buy.” Then make four small checks:

  1. Check the item. Read its dimensions, color choices, material, and care instructions. A pet bandana needs a neck measurement; a food mat needs enough room for the bowls and the feeding space. Our guides to choosing a pet bandana and using a pet food mat can help with those decisions.
  2. Check the production window. Use the current product listing and shipping policy. Allow for the possibility that a complex item may take longer than a standard one.
  3. Add the transit window for the destination. Shipping time starts after dispatch. A faster shipping option, if available at checkout, should not be treated as a shorter production window.
  4. Leave a buffer. Weekends, holidays, busy seasons, weather, and carrier delays can move a package outside the hoped-for date. If the occasion is close, contact us before ordering so you can decide whether the timing is realistic.

For example, an order placed on a Saturday does not enter production that Saturday under our published policy. It begins on the next business day; the relevant production estimate comes first, and the destination’s transit estimate follows after dispatch. That is why “shipping in 3–8 business days” should never be read as “delivered 3–8 business days after checkout.”

A final check before checkout

Look once more at size, color, delivery address, and the date you need the item. This matters particularly for a gift whose recipient cannot quietly exchange it for a different fit. Under our current refund policy, change of mind or an incorrect size or color selection is not eligible for a refund or exchange unless the item is damaged, defective, misprinted, or different from what was ordered.

If something arrives with one of those problems, the refund policy explains how to contact us with the order details and photos. If your question is about fit or timing, asking before checkout is the easier route.

Common questions

Is made to order the same as personalized?

No. Made to order describes when production starts. Personalization means the product includes details chosen for a particular recipient, such as a name or image. Only assume personalization when the listing explicitly offers it.

Does expedited shipping make a made-to-order item faster to produce?

No. A faster delivery service affects transit after dispatch, if that service is offered. The production window remains a separate step.

When does the shipping estimate begin?

Petieer’s transit estimate begins once the order has been produced and dispatched. You will receive a shipping confirmation with tracking when it ships; tracking may take up to 24 hours to update.

What if I need the gift by a specific date?

Read the current product page and shipping policy, then contact us before ordering if the date is close. We can help clarify the published estimates, but a carrier estimate is not a promise of arrival on an exact day.

The best part of a pet gift is the moment it becomes part of an ordinary day: the new spot beside the bowl, the bandana worn for a walk, the box claimed before anyone has opened it. A little planning gives that moment room to arrive.
